At eLife, we continually strive to make research more equitable for all involved. We also recognise that biases in academic research often serve to unfairly limit the funding and visibility for some researchers based on their backgrounds and identities. The Ben Barres Spotlight Awards aim to help directly address those inequities by supporting the work of researchers from groups that are underrepresented in biology and medicine or from countries where research funding is scarce.
The scheme makes awards of up to $5,000 (USD) available to eligible researchers, which are awarded based on the extent to which the funds would unlock new opportunities in the recipient’s research, career and community.
